Tantra massage, at your hotel door
Tantra Massage
Tantra suits the guest who has worked through everything brisk and found that none of it reached the thing that was actually tight. It is breath-led bodywork out of the Indian tradition, adapted across the last century into something slower and more deliberate than anything sold by the half hour. A hotel room turns out to be the right setting for it, no reception noise, no next appointment, and curtains you are allowed to close at four in the afternoon.
India (Tantric tradition, adapted for modern bodywork)
Where it comes from
Tantra names a body of Indian ritual practice documented from around the sixth century onward, in which breath, touch and attention were treated as one system rather than three separate ones. What is offered across Europe today descends from the neo-tantra of the 1970s, which kept the breathwork and the pacing and left the liturgy behind entirely. The massage form is Western and recent; the breathing at the centre of it is neither.
The technique
It opens with breath rather than with hands. She matches your rate first, then slows her own, and yours follows without anyone having to mention it. Strokes run long and ascending, feet toward the head, with the palm staying in contact through the return so the body never registers a break between one pass and the next. Pressure is deliberately light, the aim is heat and circulation rather than working tissue, and the stillness she leaves between passes is the method, not a gap in it.
What to expect
It starts with both of you still and breathing in time, which takes a few minutes and feels odd for about two of them. Hands begin at the feet and work upward in long ascending strokes, the intent being to move warmth through the body rather than to press knots out of it. The pauses are part of the technique and not gaps in it. Somewhere in the second half most people stop tracking which hour they are in, and that is the point at which it starts working properly. Before anything begins she asks whether there is an area you would rather she left alone, and whether you want the room silent or with low music from her phone. In the last stretch the strokes lengthen and slow further still, and she stays seated beside you for a few quiet minutes afterwards, in no hurry to pack up.
Who it suits
The traveller who has tried the firm end of the menu and found it did not reach whatever was actually wrong, and anyone with a long evening and no reason to look at a phone in the middle of it. It is a sensible choice, too, for guests who find strong pressure uncomfortable, since the touch stays light throughout, and for anyone who likes to understand what is happening, because she will explain the breathing in plain words if you ask.
Benefits
People come out of a tantra hour unusually calm and unusually alert at the same time. It is the closest thing to a full reset we carry, and it lasts into the next day rather than wearing off in the lift. Guests who book it on the first night of a stay often say the city felt slower for the rest of the trip. The calm it leaves is clear-headed rather than drowsy, which is why some people choose it late in the afternoon and still go out to dinner once it is over.
Length
How long, and how it is settled
Ninety minutes is the shortest length that does it justice; three-hour and overnight bookings are common, because the technique deepens the less it is rushed rather than simply going further.
Flat rates. The same figure at three in the afternoon and at three in the morning, no night rate, no weekend rate, and no travel fee anywhere inside the ring. Four hands on one guest cost twice the single hour, a couple with a therapist each four times it, and every figure for this technique waits on the profile of the woman who gives it.
Outcall across Amsterdam, your hotel room or your apartment, forty to sixty minutes to the door in the centre at any hour. The Schiphol airport hotels are by arrangement; say so when you write.
Before you write
Tantra Massage, asked and answered
Am I supposed to do something, or do I just lie there?
You breathe, and that is genuinely the whole instruction. Nothing is expected of you in terms of posture, technique or participation, and the few minutes of breathing at the start are there to hand over the pacing. After that the work is hers.
Is there anything religious or ceremonial about it?
No. There is no chanting, no ritual and nothing you have to believe in for it to work. What was kept from the tradition is the breathwork and the slowness; everything else was left where it came from.
Why do you steer people away from booking an hour?
Because the first twenty minutes are spent arriving, and in an hour that leaves too little of the work that makes it worth booking. Ninety minutes is the point where it does what it is meant to. If an hour is all the room gives you, sensual or body to body will serve you better.
Can the two of us book tantra together in the same room?
Yes, as a couples session in which each of you has a therapist of your own, the two of them working side by side and keeping to one clock. Ninety minutes remains the shortest length we would suggest, and the room needs either a second bed or clear floor for the folding table the second therapist carries up.
