Where it comes from
Plain oil massage is close to universal and older than any written account of it. What shaped the version practised in Europe today was California in the 1960s, where the long unbroken stroke was slowed down and the body stopped being treated as a set of separate regions to be worked in turn. The technique is old; only the expectation that an hour of it should be private and unhurried is recent.
The technique
Warm oil, an open palm, and one rule underneath everything: both hands are never off you at the same time. A stroke leaves the shoulder and is already arriving at the opposite hip, so the body never registers a gap and never has to settle twice. Pressure stays moderate and even, since the work is in the length of the stroke rather than the force behind it. Your part is to stop carrying your own weight, which takes most people about ten minutes and is the only thing anyone will ask of you.
What to expect
The oils are warm before she knocks; that is done downstairs or in the lift, not at your expense. The first stretch is broad and unhurried across the back, shoulders and the long muscles either side of the spine, and the pace does not change when the work moves on from there. How much do I undress, and is that decided before she arrives?

Will the oil end up on the hotel's bedding?
