Four hands is a single massage performed by two therapists working as a mirrored pair, the same stroke landing on both sides of you at the same moment, which the brain gives up trying to follow after a few minutes. It is the most choreographed thing we do and, less obviously, the one that takes the most arranging: two arrivals timed to the same minute, two bags, one room.

Where it comes from
Two practitioners working one body in synchrony is documented in Ayurvedic abhyanga, where a pair worked together and the value lay in the loss of a predictable pattern rather than in the extra hands. Western spa menus took the format up in the 1990s and renamed it four-hand, and the choreography tightened as it travelled, a lead and a mirror, the sequence agreed before the room is entered. The technique
The order of the work is settled between them before they start, because nothing in it can be renegotiated mid-stroke. What happens next is the reason people book it: two inputs arriving at the same instant on opposite sides cannot be tracked, so after a few minutes the brain stops trying, and that giving-up is the effect. Coverage runs double throughout, back and legs under hands at the same time rather than one after the other. The only asymmetry is deliberate, at the handover points where one pair of hands lifts and the other carries the line on.
What to expect
They come up together or a few minutes apart depending on the building and the hour, and neither of them will linger anywhere on the way. There is a short exchange between them about sequence, often in a language you will not follow, and then it runs almost silently with one leading and one matching. Coverage is doubled and effort halved: back and legs are worked at once rather than in turn. It finishes with the two of them moving down from shoulders to feet in step. The bed is usually eased a little away from the wall, or the folding table goes up in the clearest part of the room, so that each of them can stand on one side of you without stretching. Any talk between them stops once the work starts, and the tempo is held by whichever of the two stands at your head.
Who it suits
Guests with one night in the city who want a fuller version of the evening, and anyone who has stopped getting much out of a single pair of hands. It fits a suite or a larger executive room best, and guests who are marking something, a signed deal or the last evening of a long assignment, and would like the hour to feel unlike any massage they have had before.

The fastest route to properly switched off that we know of, plus a pleasant disorientation that tends to last the rest of the evening. With both sides worked at once the body gets no chance to brace for the next stroke, so the stillness afterwards arrives sooner than it would with one therapist. Plenty of guests say ninety minutes of it felt considerably longer.

How long, and how it is settled
For one guest, two therapists cost twice the single hour at any length; ninety minutes and two hours are the usual bookings, three hours is straightforward, and the overnight with both of them is a block priced on its own.
Flat rates. The same figure at three in the afternoon and at three in the morning, no night rate, no weekend rate, and no travel fee anywhere inside the ring. Four hands on one guest cost twice the single hour, a couple with a therapist each four times it, and every figure for this technique waits on the profile of the woman who gives it.

Is the doubled rate charged per therapist, or once for the pair?
Once for the pair. Longer sessions multiply it hour by hour, and nothing is added for travel inside the ring or for the hour of the night. The eight-hour night with both is a block with a figure of its own, and a couple booking two therapists pays the couple rate instead, four times the single hour.
Do they arrive at the same time?
That is the intention, and in most buildings it happens. Where a lift or an entry system makes two simultaneous arrivals awkward they will come up a couple of minutes apart, and the work does not begin until both are in the room. Either way nothing is left waiting in a lobby.
Can any two therapists be paired, or does it have to be a set pair?
It works best between two therapists who already work together and have both agreed to take the booking, because the timing depends on it. Tell us the hour and the length, and the confirmation names both of them once they have each said yes.
Can four hands be combined with nuru or body to body?
Yes. Four-hand nuru works well, with the bed sheeted in the usual way and the rinse afterwards taken without hurry. Body to body with two therapists is possible too, provided the bed is wide enough for both to work alongside you. Say which you want when you book so the pair arrives prepared for it.
