Nuru Massage
Nuru came out of the bath houses of Kawasaki, where the floor was tiled, the drain was in the room and the water was already running. None of that exists upstairs in a hotel, so everything the technique needs is carried in instead: sheeting for the bed, clear seaweed gel warmed before she arrives, and enough fresh towels that nothing is asked of housekeeping afterwards.
Where it comes from
Nuru is simply the Japanese word for slippery, and the gel that gives the technique its name is made from nori seaweed — colourless, odourless, and able to hold water far longer than any oil will. The format was formalised inside Japan's licensed bath houses in the middle of the last century and stayed there until the mid-2000s, when European operators started importing the gel rather than the plumbing. Almost everything sold as nuru outside Japan is that imported version: the same gel, no tiled floor.
The technique
The gel is brought up to body temperature before she knocks, because cold gel ends a session inside the first minute. Contact is made along whole lengths rather than with fingertips — shin, forearm, torso — and each movement is a slide that never lifts off at the end, so pressure never spikes in one place. One pass covers the back from shoulder to heel instead of working it in sections. What you contribute is staying flat and letting the bed take you; everyone braces at the start, and the massage improves the minute you stop.
What to expect
You shower while she prepares the bed, which takes about five minutes and is the only part that looks like setup. The gel goes on at skin temperature, and from there the massage is given with her whole body — forearms and hands steering rather than doing the work. There is almost no friction and almost no sound to it, which is part of why it travels so well into a room with neighbours on both sides. Afterwards there is a rinse, the sheeting folds back into the bag, and the bed is remade.

Can the gel damage the hotel's bedding?
It never reaches it. Disposable sheeting goes over the bed before the gel is opened, the whole session happens on top of that, and it folds back into the bag at the end. The gel itself is water-soluble and comes off in a shower in under a minute.
There is no bath in the room, only a shower. Is that a problem?
No. A shower is what this version of the technique is built around, which is why the sheeting and the towels come up in the bag. You rinse before and after; nothing else about the room is needed.
Can nuru be done by two therapists?
