Couples Massage
Two guests, two therapists, one room, run in parallel rather than in turn. Most hotel rooms take it without being rearranged — two beds, or one bed and the folding table she brings up — and the ones that do not are usually solved by moving a chair. It suits couples who travel together and would rather not spend half an evening waiting for each other in a spa corridor.
Where it comes from
Side-by-side massage for two is a product of destination resorts in the 1990s, where the room itself was what was being sold and the treatment was simply what happened inside it. Before that, two people booking together were given consecutive appointments and one of them waited. The change was logistical rather than technical: the same techniques, one room, and a finish that lands at the same moment for both.
The technique
Two sessions run alongside each other and are paced against each other, which means each therapist is tracking her colleague's progress as closely as her own work. The techniques do not have to match — the timings do. Where there is only one bed the second works from a folding table, placed so that neither of you spends the hour facing a wall. The close is synchronised to within about a minute, which is the part guests notice afterwards.
What to expect
They arrive together and spend the first few minutes working out how the room goes: which side, what gets moved, whether the curtains come across. The two sessions are deliberately paced to finish within a minute of each other, so neither of you is left lying there listening to the other one. Talking across the room is normal and nobody minds it. Everything that came up in the bags goes back down in them.
Who it suits
Couples on a short trip who would rather not lose an evening to a spa booking system, and anyone marking an occasion who would sooner not leave the room to do it.
Benefits
An evening the two of you spent in the same room rather than in the same building, and the rare state of both being equally unhurried at the end of it.

Can we each have a different technique?
Yes, and a good many couples do. One of you can take something firm and conventional while the other takes body to body or nuru; the therapists match the clock rather than the strokes. Say which is which when you book so the right pair is sent.
Does it have to be a couple?
No. Two friends travelling together book this as often as couples do. The format is two guests, two therapists and one room, and nothing about it assumes a relationship between the people in it.
There is only one bed in the room. Does that rule it out?
Not at all. The second therapist brings a folding table up and it goes wherever the room allows, usually with a metre or so between the two. Tell us the room type when you book and we will say plainly whether it will be comfortable or whether ninety minutes in turn would suit you better.
