The Quiet of a Corridor

Stand in a hotel corridor at one in the morning and listen properly. There is a hum from the lift machinery, something distant from the ventilation, and then nothing. Not the muffled nothing of a quiet house but a specific, dead, upholstered nothing, as though the building has been wrapped.

It has. A corridor is one of the most deliberately deadened spaces in ordinary architecture, and every element of it is doing acoustic work. Understanding how is more useful than any amount of reassurance, because it tells you exactly where sound in a hotel actually goes, and it is not where guests think.

How the silence is built

Heavy carpet over thick underlay, which kills footfall and absorbs most of the mid range. Doors that are solid-cored and heavy, hung on self-closing hinges, with brush seals at the threshold that a hotel replaces more often than you would guess. Fire doors at intervals, which break a long corridor into short acoustic segments so that nothing carries end to end. Textured wall finishes and fabric panels, which exist for sound as much as for appearance.

The net effect is that a corridor is bad at transmitting sound in either direction. A conversation at normal volume inside a room does not arrive in the hallway in any recoverable form. This is not an opinion; it is the reason a hotel can put a hundred strangers on one floor and have none of them hear each other.

Where sound actually travels

Sideways, through the wall to the room next door, and this is the answer guests are usually looking for without realising they are asking the wrong question. Party walls between hotel rooms vary enormously. A purpose-built tower from the last twenty years has proper separation and you will hear nothing. A canal house converted in stages since the nineteen-sixties may have a stud partition between two rooms that was once a single room, and those walls are honest about everything.

The practical consequence is small but real. If your room is in an old building and you can hear the television next door, your neighbour is in the same position, and the sensible adjustment is the obvious one: the format, the volume, and the hour. It is worth a sentence at booking rather than a discovery at midnight, and it is one of the few genuine reasons we would suggest one format over another: body-to-body on warm oil asks nothing at all of a building, where the gel and soap formats ask a good deal of its plumbing.

The one place people loiter

Corridors have a single weak point and it is the service alcove: the ice machine, the vending recess, the housekeeping cupboard. It is the only stretch of any hotel floor where somebody stands still for thirty seconds with nothing to do but look down the hallway.

This is why arrivals here do not involve waiting anywhere, ever. Not outside a lift, not at a door, not in an alcove. The therapist walks from the lift to the door and the door opens. The stage of the evening that happens in public lasts as long as the walk, and nothing has ever been improved by extending it.

After midnight it gets quieter still

The last real corridor traffic is around midnight, when the bar empties. From one onwards the floor belongs to the ventilation, and the only movement is somebody returning from a late flight with a case. By three the trolley has not started and the first breakfast staff are still two hours away.
