The Lamp, Not the Ceiling Light

Four things decide whether a hotel room works. Three of them can be fixed before anybody knocks.

A hotel room is a functional object designed to be neutral, and neutrality is not the same as comfort. Left exactly as the building configured it, a standard double is slightly too cold, lit like a corridor, and arranged for a person who intends to answer emails at a desk. Undoing that takes about four minutes, and most of it can be done before anyone arrives.

Four variables matter. Light, heat, sound, and floor. Only the last is genuinely fixed.

The ceiling light is the problem

Start here, because it accounts for more of the atmosphere of a room than everything else combined. Hotel ceiling fixtures are specified for cleaning and for checking that nothing has been left behind. They are bright, cool in colour, and directly overhead, and they are the reason an unfamiliar room can feel like a waiting area.

The bedside lamp is a different room. One lamp, on the side away from the working space, is enough for everything an evening requires and better than anything that can be achieved with the main light on. If the room has a floor lamp in the corner, that is better again, because the light arrives sideways rather than from above. The thing to avoid is the desk lamp, which is task lighting and points at a wall.

Curtains, in summer, deserve the same attention. Amsterdam in June is still blue at eleven and light again by half past four, and a room whose blackout curtains have been pulled but not overlapped will be bright at five. Thirty seconds of getting them properly closed is worth more than it sounds for anyone intending to sleep afterwards.

Heat takes longer than you think

This is the one thing that genuinely cannot be fixed on arrival, and it is the most common small failure in a hotel booking. Rooms in this city run cold, particularly the older properties and particularly in the hours when the building has turned its system down. A thermostat raised at the moment somebody walks in produces a warm room twenty minutes later, by which time the opening of the session has already happened in a cold one.

Turn it up when the confirmation arrives, not when the knock does. Warmer than you would choose for sleeping, because a body that is not moving loses heat steadily and oil on skin accelerates it. This matters most for the formats with the most uncovered skin and the least movement, which is to say most of them, and it matters more than any other preparation on this page.

Sound, which mostly looks after itself

Hotel corridors are engineered to be dead and hotel ventilation runs a constant low hum, and between them they handle almost everything. The variable is the party wall, which in a modern tower is excellent and in an older conversion may be a partition added when one large room became two. If you can hear the television next door, the adjustment is obvious and small.

Turn the television off rather than down. A room with something playing quietly is a room with an argument in it about whether anyone is listening.

The floor is what it is

The one variable you cannot change is whether there is a clear lane to walk on at least one long side of the bed. Suitcase on the rack, chair left in the corner, and that is the preparation finished. A narrow room with a clear side works; a large room with a case open across the floor does not, which is why floor area is a worse predictor than people assume.

None of this is anybody’s homework, and nothing fails if none of it is done; the settling of a room is part of what a therapist does in the first few minutes and is not counted against your time. But the heat has a twenty-minute lag and only you are in the room during those twenty minutes. Everything else about how a session is set up sits on the services page, the profiles are on the therapists page, and the older buildings out in Oud-Zuid have their own quarter guide.
