Once the confirmation arrives, there is a gap of forty to sixty minutes while somebody crosses the centre. Guests booking for the first time spend that gap in a state of low-grade activity that is mostly wasted, so it is worth saying what actually helps.
Four things do. Everything else is fine left alone.
The four that matter
- Turn the heat up now. It has a twenty-minute lag and this is the twenty minutes. Warmer than you would pick for sleeping.
- Shower now rather than afterwards, if you were planning on one at all.
- Hang the do-not-disturb sign, which is the one small signal every building in the trade already understands.
- Clear one long side of the bed. Suitcase on the rack, chair left where it is. That is everything.
Payment is the fifth thing and takes ten seconds of thought rather than any preparation. The balance is settled on arrival, in the first minutes, and then does not come up again. Cash in another major currency, with the exact amount confirmed in writing before she sets out, which is worth knowing if you landed with a wallet full of something other than euro; card if that is simpler; crypto if you prefer it. If a deposit went ahead, this is the remaining half, and nothing is asked for at the end. The only decision is which of the three, and it is easier made now than in a robe.
What is not worth doing
Tidying. A hotel room that has been lived in for two days looks like a hotel room that has been lived in for two days, and nobody has ever formed a view about it. Buying anything. Rearranging the furniture, which will be arranged in the first two minutes by somebody who does this every night and then put back at the end.
And worrying about the lobby, which is the thing most first-time guests spend the gap on. The lobby is the least eventful stage of the evening. She comes in as a visitor, does whatever the building asks of visitors, and goes up to the room, and the whole of it takes a couple of minutes in a building that receives visitors every evening.
What to expect when the knock comes
A soft knock, pitched for one door. Then the part everybody is curious about and nobody describes well: the first few minutes, which are not ceremonial. She comes in, the bag goes down, the balance is dealt with immediately and set aside, and the room is settled while the two of you are talking about something else entirely. The lamp replaces the ceiling light. Fresh linens go over your bed rather than instead of them. Her own towels come out, so nothing is taken from your bathroom.
That takes a few minutes and it is not counted against your time, which is the answer to the question people are too polite to ask. An hour means an hour of the session. The unpacking at the start and the packing away at the end are hers.

Afterwards
The room is put back. Linens, towels and everything used leave in the bag they arrived in, the furniture returns to where it stood, and the room that housekeeping finds in the morning is a hotel room with nothing in it to hold anyone’s attention.
Tipping comes up at this point in almost every first booking and the honest answer is short: never expected, never built into the price, entirely yours.
