Running Late Back to Your Hotel for a Massage?

Running late back to your hotel with a massage booked? One message sorts it. What she does in the meantime, what never happens, and whether you lose time.

It happens more often than anyone admits. The booking was made at eight for half past ten, dinner was meant to finish at ten, and at twenty past ten the dessert menu is still on the table with the hotel a twenty-minute walk away. Running late back to your hotel with a massage already arranged is one of the most ordinary situations in the whole business, and it is handled with a single message. What matters is when that message goes, and what you avoid doing while you catch up.

Send the message the moment you know

Not when you are sure of the new time, and certainly not when you walk in. The moment you realise the original time will not hold, write one line: running late, back at the hotel around eleven, is that all right. That line achieves more than any apology written later, because it reaches us while there is still room to rearrange things.

The timing matters because of how an arrival is built. After confirmation a therapist sets off, and she needs twenty to thirty minutes to reach most central hotels. If your message lands before she has left, the fix is trivial: she simply leaves later. If it lands while she is travelling, it is still easy, and she adjusts the last part of the journey. If it lands while she is already walking down your corridor, the options are fewer and none of them is ideal.

What she does while you are running late back to your hotel

She does not wait in your lobby. Someone sitting in a hotel lobby for half an hour, glancing at a phone, is the one picture every part of our arrival is designed to avoid, and no delay is long enough to justify creating it. Instead she stays somewhere ordinary nearby, or holds back her departure from wherever she is, and sets off again once your new time is agreed. You will not be told where she has gone. You will simply get a message when she is close.

What you should not do is try to solve it through the building. Do not leave a key card at reception for a visitor, do not ask the desk to let someone into your room, and do not ask a friend staying at the hotel to open your door. Each of those turns a private arrangement into one the hotel is now part of, which is precisely what the rest of the evening was planned to avoid. The reasoning is set out in the note on keeping reception out of it entirely.

Does a late start shorten the hour?

Where her night allows it, no. A delay you tell us about in advance moves the session rather than eating into it, and an hour booked is an hour given once she is in the room. The limit is her next booking. On a quiet Tuesday a forty-minute delay costs nothing but the forty minutes. On a Saturday at eleven, with another guest expecting her afterwards, the choice may be a shorter session that still finishes when it was due to, or a different therapist who is free later. Either way you are told plainly which it is before anything is decided, and the decision is yours.

Very long delays are another matter. If dinner has become the whole night and you will not be back for two hours, say so, and treat it as a fresh booking at the new time. Nothing is gained by holding a therapist's evening for a plan that no longer exists, and a new request later is answered as quickly as the first.

Getting back without rushing the evening

The last half hour before a session is worth protecting even when you are behind. Arriving breathless from a fast walk, dropping your coat on the bed and opening the door thirty seconds later is a worse beginning than arriving ten minutes later with time to hang the coat up and turn the heating on. If the choice is between being exactly on time and being ready, choose ready, and send the message that buys the difference.

If you can tell before dinner that the evening is likely to run long, the better fix is to book the later time from the start. The guide to timing a massage around dinner works through the arithmetic of restaurant hours in this city, which run shorter than many visitors expect in some kitchens and much longer in others.

The opposite case

Now and then the guest is back early and the therapist is the one still on her way. That is equally normal, it sits inside the usual arrival window, and if the window is going to stretch, for rain, a raised bridge or a packed weekend square, you will hear about it before you start to wonder. The expectations on both sides are gathered in the frequently asked questions.

Being late costs nothing extra. The rate stays at €180 an hour, and the only thing a late message changes is the time of the knock.

If tonight is the night

One message with the hotel, the hour and the length is all it takes. The reply names the therapist and the time she will be at your door.
