After an In-Room Massage: The Hour That Follows

What to do after an in-room massage at your hotel: seeing her to the door, the shower, sleep or a late dinner. A calm plan for the hour after the door closes.

Nearly everything written about a session concerns the stretch before the knock and the hour itself. The time after an in-room massage receives very little attention, even though it is the part that happens entirely on your own, in a room you still have to sleep in or leave for dinner. It deserves a plan of its own, if only a short one, because the ten minutes after the door closes decide a surprising amount of how the whole evening is remembered.

The last few minutes with her

The session ends before the room is tidy. She packs the oils, lifts her own sheet off the bed with the used towels, and leaves the bedding underneath the way housekeeping made it. You do not need to help, and you do not need to get dressed to watch. Lie still for a minute if you like; that minute is part of the reason for booking in a room rather than downstairs.

Seeing her out is simple. Walk her to the door of the room, not to the lift and not down to the lobby. She leaves the way she came, at the pace of a guest heading out for a late drink, and a second person in the corridor turns one ordinary departure into something slightly less ordinary. If the lift needs a keycard on the way down, that was arranged before she arrived and is handled the same way going out. A tip, if you want to give one, is handed over at this point rather than earlier, and the tipping guide covers what is usual and what nobody expects.

The shower, or not

After an oil session plenty of guests shower straight away and plenty do not, and both are fine. The oils brought to hotel bookings are chosen so as not to mark linen, which means a guest who wants to fall asleep with the warmth still on the skin can do exactly that. If you are going out again, shower; oil and a dinner shirt do not get along. After the gel formats a proper rinse is not optional, and it takes longer than people expect, which is worth building into the evening before you book.

Hot water feels better afterwards than you think it will. If the room has a bath, this is its moment.

Where there were two of you and two therapists, take the shower in turns and let whoever goes second stay lying down; a couples session ends best when nobody in the room is hurrying.

What to do after an in-room massage if you are staying in

This is the commonest case, and the best advice is to change as little as possible. Leave the lamp low rather than switching the ceiling light back on. Keep the television off for a while. Have a glass of water, because a warm room and an hour lying down leave most people thirsty, and eat something light if dinner was early. Then go to bed sooner than you imagine you will want to; the pleasant heaviness that follows a long session is easy to spend on a phone screen and hard to get back once it has gone.

If you booked late, all of this happens by default. A session finishing at one in the morning ends with a quiet room and nothing else to do, which is much of the reason late bookings keep the loyal following they have.

If you are going out afterwards

Allow forty minutes, not ten. Shower, dress slowly, and walk rather than take a taxi if the restaurant is close. Guests who book a session before dinner often say the first half hour afterwards was the slowest part of their evening and the part they liked best. Rushing it to make a reservation is the surest way to waste what was paid for, and the earlier note on booking before dinner rather than after is about exactly that trade.

A line of feedback, if you want to send one

Nobody asks for a review, and nothing is expected. But a short message the next day is more useful than guests realise, because it shapes the next booking. Firmer on the shoulders, less conversation, a longer opening, the lamp further away: any of those, sent in a sentence, is passed on and remembered, so that a second evening starts where the first one finished rather than from zero. Something that did not work is worth saying just as plainly, and it is received without fuss.

If there was nothing to add, there is nothing to send. Silence after a good evening is its own kind of feedback, and it is read that way.

Booking the next one

Guests on longer stays often ask whether they should rebook on the spot. There is no need; the line is open at every hour, and a message on any later night is answered in about ten minutes just as the first was. If you want the same therapist again, give her name next time, and if she is working that night she will usually come. The rate is €180 an hour whenever you book.

If tonight is the night

One message with the hotel, the hour and the length is all it takes. The reply names the therapist and the time she will be at your door.
