A last minute massage is rarely planned as a last minute massage. More often, something else was planned and did not happen. A typical version reached us one evening in March: a guest in town for work had a dinner with a client booked for half past seven, and at ten to seven the client wrote to cancel. He was already dressed, already hungry and suddenly had nowhere to be.
He ordered room service, and while he waited for it, he wrote to us. That order of events is worth copying.
What a last minute massage needs from you
His message was short: the neighbourhood of the hotel, ninety minutes, and a request to start after he had eaten. Those three details were enough. The coordinator replied within ten minutes with a name and a time just after half past eight, which left him space to finish the meal, put the tray outside the door and take a shower.
What made the booking easy was not that he wrote quickly. It was that he wrote clearly. A last minute request that says only "available now?" produces a round of questions before anything can happen. A request that already contains the place, the length and the preferred start time can be answered with one reply.
The empty evening problem
A cancelled plan leaves a strange kind of evening. You are prepared for company and conversation, and instead you have a quiet room, a television you have no interest in, and the faint feeling that the night has been wasted. Going out alone in a city you do not know well is possible, but after a long working day it rarely appeals.
A session in the room solves that without asking for any new energy. Nothing has to be planned, nobody has to be met in a lobby and there is no table to find. The evening takes shape around you instead of requiring you to shape it.
How short is short notice
From the first message to the knock, a last minute booking takes about an hour: roughly ten minutes to confirm, then forty to sixty minutes for the therapist to reach any address in central Amsterdam. That window does not change at the weekend and does not change after dark. The last minute massage page explains why the line can answer at such short notice at almost any hour.
The only bookings that cannot be arranged in that way are visits to hotels by the airport, which are planned in advance, and the handful of peak nights each year when the city is full and availability is tighter.
The deposit on a first evening
Our guest had never booked with the house before, so his booking carried a deposit of half the fee: 135 euros of the 270 for ninety minutes with one therapist. He sent it by card inside the confirmed thread, which took about two minutes, and paid the remaining 135 euros to her in cash when she arrived.
On his next visit to the city, a same-day booking of one or two hours will be paid entirely in the room. That is the only booking that skips the deposit, and it is reserved for guests the house already knows. Full details, including what happens when a booking is cancelled, are on the cancellation policy page.
Room service first, session second
The sequence he chose is one we suggest to anyone booking straight after a cancelled dinner. Eat something light first, because a session on an empty stomach after a long day can leave you lightheaded, and a heavy meal straight before one is uncomfortable. Give yourself twenty minutes between the last bite and the knock. Put the tray in the corridor so it is not in the room.
Then do the small things that make an hour better: one lamp on, the ceiling light off, the heating up a degree or two, the phone on silent except for the thread.
What he said afterwards
He wrote a short line the next morning, which guests do not have to do and most do not. The dinner, he said, would have been two hours of polite conversation about quarterly figures. The replacement was considerably better. He has since booked twice more on later trips, both times planned in advance, both times at the same hotel.
If your own evening has just been cancelled, the therapist profiles are a good place to spend the two minutes before you write.
