The front desk and a visitor for your room

Guests often ask, reasonably enough, whether the hotel knows. Is there an understanding with reception? Should something be mentioned at check-in? The answer to each is no, and deliberately so.

Why no arrangement exists

An understanding with a hotel would have to live somewhere: in a handover note, in a duty manager's memory, in a reservation comment that outlasts the stay. The moment an evening depends on reception, the evening exists on paper in a building the guest does not control. A visit that requires nothing from the desk leaves nothing at the desk. Hotels also change managers and policies constantly, and a method that relies on nobody's goodwill cannot be withdrawn by anybody's departure. How the desk is left out of it

A therapist walks through a lobby as any guest back from a late dinner would: at an unhurried pace, straight to the lifts, without pausing to ask the way. She has looked at the building before leaving, so she knows which side the lifts are on. At eleven at night a reception team is watching for people who hesitate, and someone who does not hesitate is simply another person going upstairs. The piece the lobby at eleven describes that walk.

When the building has its own rules

A few hotels ask that visitors after a certain hour be met in the lobby, and some lock their lifts to keycards overnight. Neither is a problem, provided the office knows before she sets out. A short line in the thread is enough, and the arrival is then timed so that the guest comes down and the two go up together.

What the guest should never do is ask reception to send someone up, give the desk a name to expect or leave a note for a visitor. Each of those creates exactly the record the method is designed to avoid. The wider approach is described under discretion.
